Sand Casting Explained: Process, Advantages, and Applications

As detailed by ScienceDirect in their article “Sand Casting”, sand casting is a foundational metal casting technique that continues to evolve with modern manufacturing needs. Once best suited for small-volume production, it’s now widely used for large-scale operations, thanks to automation and advanced moulding technologies.

In sand casting, molten metal is poured into a mould formed from a sand mixture. While this process generally produces components with rough surfaces and minor impurities, it’s highly efficient for medium to large metal parts such as engine blocks, crankshafts, and valve bodies. The final product’s dimensional accuracy and surface finish depend heavily on the type of sand and moulding method used.
